Crumbs under the covers are one of the biggest sleep-disrupting culprits. According to a recent study from Serta Simmons bedding, 80 percent of Americans say finding unwanted leftovers leads to their worst night’s sleep. And yet more than a third of respondents admit to eating in bed.

Those surveyed also revealed that another common interruption is feeling hot (76 percent said they often wake up to kick off a duvet or turn down the thermostat). On the other hand, the data also showed the key to catching more Zz’s to start in the morning: 77 percent claimed that crawling into a freshly made bed helps them rest more easily.

JD Velilla, head of sleep experience at Serta Simmons Bedding, recommends writing down the sources of your disturbances so you can come up with a solution. “If something wakes you up in the middle of the night, write it down and see if you can find a product or solution for it,” he advises. Whatever your bad bedroom habits, here are a few items to add to your sleep-inducing shopping list.

For midnight snacks

If you can’t shake that appetite in the late hours or you want to enjoy breakfast in bed, a stylish tray is a must-have for guest in the room. And you may want to add a waterproof protector to the list while you’re at it to protect your mattress from coffee stains or nightcaps.

For warm sleepers

What if we told you that you can have a cool-side-of-the-pillow feeling anywhere in your bed? Set yourself up with a trifecta with the best moisture-wicking sheets, mattresses and pillows, and you can say goodbye to those sticky night sweats.

For lovers of messy beds

According to Velilla, clearing your bed starts your morning off right and creates a moment to look forward to when you snuggle up under the covers that evening. Make the chore more fun with cozy bedding that matches the season or an oversized quilt that looks good even if you just toss it on. Your parents may have been onto something.
