The Cupboard Style We’re Seeing at Every Retailer This Season

When making storage a priority in every corner, boxy bins, straight-edge shelving, and more angular forms are usually the way to go. But we’ve been noticing an organization piece that brings an elegant curve into the picture, while keeping things clean and streamlined.

Our go-to furniture shops are all carrying a very similar-looking black arched cabinet. Some companies are suggesting it as a place to display books and curios; others are recommending barware or a wardrobe. Rounded silhouettes have been all abuzz this past year, so it makes sense they’re starting to inform the design of more utilitarian objects, too. And the nice thing about a freestanding arched piece is that it instantly adds character to a room (no contractor involved). Shop four of our favorite takes on this organization trend.

For Displaying Small Treasures: Guthrie Cabinet

Annie Charcoal Storage Cabinet, McGee and Co ($4200)

Keep your precious objets d’art out of reach but top of mind by putting them behind a cupboard with see-through glass doors. This one from Studio McGee’s shop has a sturdy powder-coated iron frame and thick oakwood shelves, so you won’t have to worry about it (or anything inside) toppling over.

Annie Charcoal Storage Cabinet, Crate & Barrel ($1899)

Designed by Leanne Ford for her first collection with Crate & Barrel, this white oak piece finished in a dark charcoal stain can double as a closet (the large flat-front doors are completely solid). One of the shelves is fixed and two are adjustable, so you can easily customize it, while also making room for colder weather’s bulkier sweaters.

No butler pantry? No problem. Stack your tableware high in this extra-tall option. Its dark interior and patina-ed glass will add an edgy look to the most basic white china collection. When you compare it to the cost of putting real built-in cabinets in your dining room or kitchen (an average of $5,000), you realize it’s a huge win for your budget, too.

For Your Ever-Growing To-Read List: Mason Cabinet

Mason Storage Cabinet by UO in black stain

Mason Storage Cabinet, Urban Outfitters ($1699)

While we’ve seen Urban Outfitters’s Mason Storage cabinet used as a modern upgrade on the traditional hutch (take drag wrestler Jassy’s New Orleans home, for instance), the long lasting popularity of this piece lies in its versatility. Beyond holding dinnerware, why not elevate your bookshelf overflow by stacking tall photo portfolios and smaller paperbacks in between the three adjustable shelves?

Storage Cabinet by Anthropologie

Fern Storage Cabinet, Anthropologie ($2698)

Who says you need a proper linen closet? While framed photos, vases, or your vinyl collection can live on this ash-wood piece’s shelves, the marble-top drawers are ideal for storing spare bedding. This fall you’re bound to be your most organized self yet.
