One thing that can give us picky design folks a run for our money is our even pickier cats. Our biggest cohabitation challenge is finding a litter box setup that is discreet enough to go unnoticed by humans yet detectable enough for cats to do their business in. After scouring the web for the best hidden litter boxes that our cats won’t refuse to use (and we won’t abhor the sight), we’ve opted for the selection below of clever solutions linked to five different interior styles. Scroll on to buy the kitty loos crème de la crème that will nestle nicely next to a towering monstera or MCM style couch.
Our short list
Iris Top Entry Litter Box ($29 was $30)
This premium hidden cat litter solution combines clean, understated lines with a 1970s-esque color combination of creamy tangerine and smooth brown — all for under $30. The simple design features a generously sized entry point at the top for your cat, along with a grooved lid that acts as a welcome mat, collecting particles from the legs and preventing unwanted spreading of litter. As one reviewer on Chewy.com confirms, “what comes out of the box stays in the well-designed top.” While extremely light at around three pounds, the lid is designed to hold up to 20 pounds, making it a perfect perch for heavier cats. (Another Chewy.com reviewer notes that their typically finicky, big cat made it to the top box surprisingly well.)
Haven Litter Box Enclosure, Tuft and Paw ($699)
For a decidedly stylish and modern cat furniture, see Tuft and Paw’s take on the hidden litter box. This design is made of plywood with an ash veneer and accented with white semi-gloss metal. It is both aesthetically pleasing and cat-friendly; with a screened window that allows for optimum airflow, along with a fold-down panel that allows for easy litter refreshment. While an investment piece, the purchase comes fully equipped with a complimentary litter box, shovel, dustpan, and can, not to mention a first-hand reviewer’s praise. “This box is now her #1 favorite place to do her business,” writes a Tuft and Paw reviewer. Another states that their cat has “never been so lucky” to answer nature’s call – the ultimate furry stamp of approval.
Skylight Litter Box, Cat Person ($175)
Jason Wu’s collaboration with Cat Person brings us this matte black, recyclable polypropylene and white finished pine creation – which is about as elegant as you’d expect from a designer litter box. The thoughtfully designed frame has two slim pieces for easy assembly and is equipped with rounded corners that simplify the clean-up process (think no lingering waste stuck in hard-to-reach edges). But human appeal wasn’t the only priority with this beautiful litter box. Cat Person consulted with a veterinary consultant about the vented design to ensure adequate airflow for the cat occupants. (Be careful with the lid though – it has a 25lb weight capacity, so keep stacking books and fat cats hanging around to a minimum!)
Munford Double Entry Wooden Cat Litter Enclosure with Storage, Brown, Wayfair ($178 was $359)
We found this discreet wooden litter box — with multi-purpose details and a subtly Scandi-modern appeal — hiding on Wayfair. The dual-entrance design eliminates potential traffic jams for multi-cat households, and once inside, the two-shelf interior offers secret storage. Finally, the roomy top bench can serve as an excellent perch for cat naps, birdwatching, etc. Reviewers love that the litter box is not only invisible to guests, but is well made for their fussy cats, litter scoops, liners, and bags. .
Handmade Wicker Litter Box Enclosure, Etsy ($192 was $240)
A handmade litter box number with reed for more traditional interiors – and cats. Made from seagrass harvested by local artists along Vietnam’s Red River Delta, this cane rattan structure features an opening front window/door (for easy access and cleaning) plus a padded top bench (for extra comfortable seating). The majority of Etsy reviewers gave this store’s unique housing five-out-of-five stars for its adorable exterior that matches the cat-approved interior.
